The city of Ibadan is where the phenomenal Adenike of The Cake Chancery bakes her delicious cakes. The cake maker extraordinaire and political scientist turned baker started way back in 2014 after a said baker disappointed her by baking a terrible cake. The curiosity as to how ‘difficult’ it was to execute baking was one of the reasons she gave baking a trial.

Nike shared with us on this interview, how it was challenging starting out as a baker, what drives her creativity and of course remarkable moments as a baker.

WHO IS THE CAKE CHANCERY?

The mastermind behind The cake Chancery is Adenike Ponnle , a political science graduate of the University of Ibadan .
WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO TAKE BAKING AS A PROFESSION?
2014, and the reasons was because firstly, I got a terrible birthday cake made for me by the person I paid to make my birthday cake… I was really livid and was like “ what’s so hard about baking this person couldn’t execute, I really want to know”…. Secondly, I was at the phase in my life where I needed to get something doing for myself so I thought to give baking a trial since it was never in my plan to become a baker…. but look at me now

TO THE BEST OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE, THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT AND IDEAS IN BAKING AND CAKE MAKING IN GENERAL HAS IT BROUGHT ABOUT POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE CHANGE?

I’d go with the positive change, it’s really amazing how so many people are interested in knowing the craft day by day.

THE CHALLENGES FACED BEING A BAKER CAN BE ENORMOUS AND UNRELATABLE FOR ANYONE WHO’S NOT INTO THE PROFESSION. KINDLY SHARE A FEW OF THESE CHALLENGES SINCE YOU STARTED PROFESSIONALLY.
The major challenge I had was capital, baking is capital intensive. There were moments I mixed butter and sugar with bare hands till it becomes fluffy simply because I couldn’t afford to buy a hand mixer to make work easier and stress free for me. And the phase I had to bake with charcoal oven etc.
Then the challenge of being known, popularity.. i later realized that one would have to put in so much work in this aspect to get the fame needed for the business, get better at this craft and let your skills do the talking for you.

IS IT PROFITABLE BAKING IN IBADAN CITY COMPARED TO OTHER CITIES AND STATES IN NIGERIA?

Personally, I believe profits will be made anywhere one chooses to run the business in as much as you know your onions.

WAS THERE A MOMENT SINCE YOU STARTED PROFESSIONALLY YOU REALIZED CAKE MAKING WAS ACTUALLY A CALLING FOR YOU?
YES, so many amazing moments but the one that topped it was when I created a Coldstone themed cake and it broke the sphere of twitter, I was like “ wow” you can actually do this Nike.
IN THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD WHO INSPIRES YOU AS A CAKE MAKER?
so so so many amazing bakers , way so many but Lizziecakesandcraft got my heart.. she’s really really really creative and outstanding.
TAKE US THROUGH SOME OF THE MOST REMARKABLE MOMENTS YOU’VE HAD AS A CAKE MAKER?
Remarkable moments for me will always be when people chat me up to tell me “ I saw a cake somewhere and I knew u made it way before u posted it on IG/twitter….. I don’t think words can explain how beautiful it is for people to recognize your signature on a cake , this will always be my top tier remarkable moments as a baker.
