Cooking is therapeutic for many people some see the entire process a time to loosen up and put worries away. The process of making those palatable and exquisite dishes you see isn’t always smooth it requires strategic planning and of course funding.
The hours you spend planning all these doesn’t mean you get the desired result instantly for some,
it requires a deliberate and consistent practice for Nigerian Food Blogger, Ikechukwu Godspower Oruh who spoke with King Darhniel during our Exclusive Interview sometimes last week disclosed that he sometimes beats himself up when he fails to perfect a recipe.
The food content creator and recipe developer at Meal Master, spoke on how he started cooking, he shared the creative process he takes to achieving the desired result when making recipes, his worries and challenges of being a food content creator and his future goals. We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed having this interview.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF
My name is Ikechukwu Oruh graduate of mass communication from the University of Lagos. I’m from Abia State and I’m a food blogger and recipe developer.
AT WHAT AGE DID YOU START COOKING?
WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND BEING A FOOD BLOGGER?
In as-much as I don’t want to sound cliche with the “I started at a young age” anthem Lol but it is what it is Lol I actually started cooking when I was really young. Can’t really state the precise age tho but I remember cooking in my primary school days and I wasn’t even a teenager yet. To be honest I think I get inspiration from other food bloggers. At some point I recall stumbling on some pictures from other foodbloggers, some were appealing to the eyes, others weren’t so at that point I felt I could do same but make mine pleasing and beautiful to the eyes. I actually started posting on my WhatsApp story before moving to Instagram.
DID YOU STUDY ANYTHING FOOD RELATED IN THE UNIVERSITY?
Nope. Not even food and nutrition in high school Lol. Like I said earlier, I studied Mass communication.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN CREATING FOOD CONTENT?
For almost 3 years now. But I officially started posting on the gram just last year. Prior to that time, I was just posting on my WhatsApp story.
DO YOU INTEND TO BE A CHEF SOMEDAY?
Definitely! By His Grace, I’d really love to earn that title.
MOST ADVENTUROUS MEAL YOU’VE EVER MADE?
That would be a local dish from cotonou. It’s called “jeh wor” not sure of the spelling Lol but that’s how it’s pronounced and it’s made from corn meal and could be red or light brown in color.
HOW DID THE MEAL TURN OUT?
Itturned out pretty nice but, it would have been better Lol
WHAT DO YOU FEEL WHEN A NEW RECIPE DOESN’T TURN OUT THE WAY YOU EXPECT?
Honestly, I beat myself up anytime I fail when trying out a new recipe and when it doesn’t turn out as expected, but, the thing is I encourage myself. There’d be mistakes but you’ll learn from them. I try doing it again and realize my mistakes and I end up getting a good result.
CAN YOU TAKE US THROUGH YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS BEFORE POSTING ONLINE?
Okay so here’s how it goes
• I think of the dish I want to make
• I think of how and where to get the required ingredients
• I visualize how I want the picture to turn out
• I cook
• I plate
• Then I take pictures, edit and post. Voila!
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES YOU ENCOUNTER WITH CREATING FOOD CONTENT?
Funds are a major challenge sha Lol some of the ingredients required for a particular dish don’t come cheap at all. So If I can’t make a dish because of the cost of getting the necessary ingredients, I put it on hold and try it out when I’m financially buoyant.
Lighting is major challenge too. Sometimes I spend hours just looking for the perfect lighting and angle. I make use of both natural and artificial light so you can imagine. By angle I mean all the “close shot” “long shot” and all the shots needed while shooting a video and this would mean re-setting the camera position to shoot the required angle and at the same time I’m cooking, so you can imagine the stress Lol
Equipment, props is a challenge too. It all boils down to funds
HAS BEING A FOOD BLOGGER AFFECTED YOUR PERSONAL LIFE IN ANY WAY ? IF SO , LET US KNOW. In a negative way, nope. In a positive way, yes cos it has made me to always update my knowledge on food, learn new things and new ways of making a particular meal. Basically, it has helped me become a better cook.
WHAT DO YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS THINK OF YOUR CAREER PATH?
They think it’s good and they’re very supportive of it and I really appreciate their support.
WHAT SHOULD WE BE EXPECTING FROM YOU IN THE NEAREST FUTURE? What else? Expect more amazing and mouthwatering content Lol. yea
