English Name: Ugli fruit

Botanical Name: Citrus × tangelo

DESCRIPTION: A huge great lump of citrus fruit, very ugly, that is apparently a hybrid across of grapefruit, orange and tangerine. A fruit with a rough, yellowish-orange skin and sweet flesh with alot of juice.

ORIGIN: The Ugli fruit was found growing wild in Jamaica, and it is believed to be a hybrid of grape fruit and tangerine, and perhaps pomelo. It is indeed a rather Ugli fruit mostly green and wrinkled until it is fully ripe, when it turns orange like ours. It’s available from December through April.

NATURAL BENEFITS: Ugli fruit provides 70% of the recommended daily value in vitamin C which is great for boosting diseases immunity. It contains vitamin A and fiber low in fat and has a low glycemic index like other citrus fruits.

Ugli fruit may prevent and fight against kidney stones, cancer and heart disease. It also aids brain functioning as it helps in memory retention.

USES: It may be halved like grapefruit or used as a light addition to fruit or vegetable salads, gelatin desserts. etc.
